Basic drawing

This course welcomes first-time artists and learners returning to the fundamentals. Build skill while enjoying the focus and satisfaction of turning careful observation into a finished drawing.

What you can learn

The aim is not a difficult drawing on day one. We start from the practice your current work is asking for. Everyone gets stuck somewhere different, so the drawing in progress decides where we go.

Getting the shapeHow to measure size and angle. Get this right and everything after it comes easier.
Light and shadeWhere the light is coming from, and which surface it lands on. Sorted out first, then laid in.
CompositionWhere on the paper, and at what size. Decided before the drawing starts.
TextureWood, cloth, metal, paper. The same pencil can tell them apart.
Drawing from observationNot copying what is there, but catching how the parts sit against each other.

Questions we get about drawing from observation

It sounds difficult, and it sounds like it is for other people. Both are worth answering.

Isn’t this for people who are already good?: The opposite. If you cannot yet tell what to fix, this is the practice where the change shows fastest.
I’m not sitting an exam. Is there any point?: Yes. It changes how you see things, which carries straight into whatever you draw for pleasure.
Will it help with illustration and manga?: Face and body balance, hands, folds in clothing, backgrounds, light and shade — all of it runs on the same fundamentals.
I’m a complete beginner.: You can start from how to hold the pencil. The course follows your goal and your level.
