Children’s art

This course turns a child’s interests into learning. Instructors listen to what each learner wants to make and help develop both technique and the confidence to turn ideas into finished work.

01

Who this course suits

  • 01Children who love to draw and to use color
  • 02Children who want to turn their own ideas into pictures
  • 03Children who prefer their own way over a set right answer
  • 04Children who want time outside school for something they love
  • 05Children who want to widen what they can make, a little at a time
02

What you can learn

We do not settle on a “correct” way to draw first. We ask what the child wants to make and how they want to make it. Given the same subject, the colors and the lines come back different from every child.

  • Drawing from observationLooking hard at what is in front of them, and catching its shape and color.
  • Working with colorColored pencil, paint, digital. Mixing and layering until it meets the color they had in mind.
  • Drawing to their own briefNot a set assignment — a piece the child wanted to make, taken through to finished.
  • Digital workWork on an iPad or tablet is supported too.
03

What the drawing is building

Give the same subject to a room of children and the colors, shapes, and mood all come back different. Those choices are the point.

  • ChoosingWhat to draw and which colors to use are theirs to decide.
  • TryingThere is time here to act on an idea and see what happens.
  • ReworkingFinding what is not right yet, and changing it.
  • ExpressingGetting what is in their head out onto the paper.
04

There is no right answer, so there is no getting it wrong

Children going through a period when school is difficult, and children not attending school, come here too.

This course has no correct answer to arrive at. The child decides what to draw and which colors to use, so there is nothing here to be marked on.

Of course, it will not suit every child. In a trial lesson we start from whatever they feel like drawing that day.

Work toward learning and belonging outside school

The school takes part in events for children who find school difficult, and for people interested in learning and belonging outside of it.

At FUTOKO DAY 2022 — Japan’s first large-scale online conference for children not attending school — we ran the Manga and Illustration Club, giving children across the country a chance to try drawing. Akihiro Nishino of King Kong appeared at the same event.

Lesson length

Each lesson is 120 minutes. Lessons are 90 minutes for middle- and final-year kindergarteners.

09

How long before they notice a change?

The pace depends on the child’s age, their interests, what they take on, and how often they come.

  • To enjoy drawing more
  • To turn their own ideas into pictures
  • To express freely through color and shape
  • To make time outside school for something they love

In a trial lesson we watch how your child gets on and suggest a way of attending that suits them.
